Sergio Leone is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. His attention to detail is everything and is the key factor in most of his movies. It is his main device here and it works brilliantly. We notice everything about the characters (all their little ticks and mannerisms) and we get to see fully developed and interesting characters. Nothing is to small to leave out. Another brilliant technique he uses is his pacing. It is so methodical and thought out that at points its almost frustrating how much tension he brings. He will use a scene where there is almost nothing to look at and maybe one sound repeating. It stretches the scene like a rubber band and when it finally breaks its that much more satisfying and deadly. His dialouge may seem to be lacking but again its more than that. He doesn’t feel the need to have his characters mutter mundane facts about the plot that we already know. Instead he lets the story unfold by itself and most of the time we have no idea what is going on in a scene until the very end. This adds to the tension and cuts out a lot of the uslessness of the movie as well. This is a very long and great film.
